The SMILE programme takes participants on a learning and leadership journey to understand themselves, develop their skills, engage with social issues and discover their potential as change makers. Through this journey, the young people are encouraged to think, not only of themselves but also of the communities around them, and grow up into socially aware, responsible and active citizens. As a part of this journey, the youth participates in workshops on social issues, deep self-awareness, conflict resolution and team building. The programme also offers rural internships with NGOs, Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and social movements across the country. Through fellowship opportunities, the youth are encouraged and mentored to initiate social change initiatives through theatre, music, films, action research clubs and campaigning. Many youth led campaigns and projects also get incubated as long term social change initiatives in different forms either with personal engagement of the young activists in their professional spheres in every sector, or with the formulation of new organisations, or new programs within established systems. The programme also celebrates the spirit of young people and make their voices heard through youth festivals are also completely led by young people. The ‘hour-glass’ elaborates on our approach and methodology of these programmes. Even though it represents a flow chart of the process, a young person can choose to join in at any point according to what interests them. Currently the programme is operational in New Delhi and Jaipur (through Pravah Jaipur Initiative), and with SMILE partners ; and Streaming partners across India.
